Not every time rushing to a dentist is the solution for a toothache! Sounds strange? Well, not really. A sinus toothache is one such situation where there is an inflammation of the maxillary sinus, more commonly known as a sinus infection. This kind of tooth pain has no relation to dental cavities. Sinuses are air filled cavities with a thin layer of mucous membrane, present in the skull, cheeks, eyes and nasal areas. Bacterial infection can enhance mucous production, which in turn, block the sinuses and creates an environment where the bacteria thrives and multiplies. Air flow into the sinus cavity is restricted. The inflammation of the sinuses around the cheeks can sometimes swell to such an extent that it puts pressure on the roots of the upper teeth. This in turn causes a sinus toothache. One of the main concerns is that it is not easily detected as a sinus toothache.
Sinus pain are of two types- Acute and Chronic. Acute Sinus lasts for a short period whereas Chronic Sinus lasts for months, sometimes longer.
