How To Remove Plaque From Teeth

March, 16 2015, Dabur Dental Team

Plaque is a sticky colourless substance that sticks to your teeth. Plaque build-up can make your teeth look ugly and make your gums unhealthy. It develops when foods containing carbohydrates, sugars and starches, such as milk, soft drinks, raisins, cakes, or candy are not regularly cleared away from the mouth. This sticky mix of bacteria, if left alone, gradually hardens, creating tartar or calculus on your teeth. Plaque can also develop on the tooth roots, under the gum. Plaque build-up can also lead to gum disease - first gingivitis, the tender and swollen gums that sometimes bleed. If it progresses, severe periodontal disease can develop. Gum tissue pulls away from the teeth, allowing the bacteria to destroy the underlying bone supporting the teeth. If you are developing Plaque, you may notice symptoms such as – bleeding gums, bad breath, tender gums, tooth ache, loose teeth, swollen gums, mouth sores.

The common causes of Plaque are inconsistent dental care. If you are guilty of the same and do not follow the below routine, you must watch out before it is too late!

  • Brush Regularly
To prevent Plaque build-up, brush your teeth at least twice a day with a soft, rounded-tip bristled toothbrush. Use India's besttoothpaste - Meswak to avoid dental problems.
  • Floss Daily
Make flossing a daily habit. This is because, brushing doesn’t reach the spaces between teeth, but Plaque does. So, you need to floss in order to remove food particles and debris from between your teeth. By flossing, you give the bacteria less of a chance to form plaque. And if left alone, Plaque below the gum line can lead to periodontal disease.
  • Eat Right
While you already know how important it is to avoid some foods such as sodas, chocolates etc., you must also know all about the correct things to eat for healthy teeth. In between meal snacks, over consumption of sweets and carbs that allows sugar to stick to the teeth, not eating enough of crunchy vegetables or fruits such as carrots, apples, cucumbers, and many other raw fruits and vegetables can cause plaque. To prevent it, watch what you eat, avoid what you must and eat what is good for your teeth. Also brush immediately after you indulge in anything that can threaten the health of your teeth to avoid dental problems. Always remembers to eat a balanced diet and choose nutritious foods such as plain yogurt, cheese, fruit, or raw vegetables. Avoid falling prey to Plaque at all costs if you want to keep safe of dental problems. Visit your dentist consistently for a full dental check up!
