February, 11 2015, Dabur Dental Team

Different children get teeth at different times, but the first tooth usually appears between 6 and 10 months. Teething is the emergence of the first tooth through a baby's gums. It is a difficult and painful process for your child and can be a very confusing time for the mommy and the baby. Here are a few things you should watch out for to see if your baby could be teething:
  1. Fever
While it can easily have other inferences as well, fever is one of the symptoms commonly associated with baby teething. No fever should be taken lightly as a fever is nothing but an indication of infection, but it can also be a symptom of something more serious, such as pneumonia or a urinary tract infection. If such a situation arises, a trip to the doctor is a must.
  2. Increased Irritation
Teething is a very tough time for your child. During this, your kid is experiencing gum pain & irritation. Chances are your happy baby will be very cranky and irritable and even hate doing things he usually loves like a stroll in the pram, bathing etc. Try and run your finger or a wet, cold, soft cloth over his gums to give a little massage in order to ease the irritation. This is a vital dental care tip.
  3. Drooling
Drooling excessively is very common. Gently wipe the drool off your baby's chin as often as you can with a soft cotton cloth. Be careful not to rub his/her chin as it may be sore. You could also apply a baby cream on the baby’s chin to protect his/her skin from further irritation.
  4. Loss of Appetite
Refusal to food/feed is another common sign that tells you that your baby may be teething. Offer foods your baby loves s/he most. Also give your baby a cold teething ring before meal times, so he feels good enough to actually want to eat.
  5. Troubled Gums
If your baby is teething, his gums will be red, puffy and swollen. Check by gently lifting your baby’s lip and you’ll know if he is teething.
  6. Chewing
Babies experience an increase in irritation in their gums when they are about to get new teeth. This gives them the urge to chew on something to ease their pain. There are many wonderful teething toys available in the market for the same purpose. Consult your paediatric dentist and buy your baby one.
  7. Change in Sleeping Habits Many children face a change in their sleeping patterns when they are about to get new teeth. Many babies don’t get any sleep at all and wail a lot due to pain and irritation.
  8. Diahorrea
This is another very common symptom of teething. The baby may be swallowing excessive amounts of saliva, causing a loose stool or diahorrea.
  9. Cold and Cough
Some babies cough, have a runny nose or cold like symptoms.
  10. Rash
Most babies who are teething develop a rash around their mouth, on their chin or chest.
