How To Make Your Dental Crown More Durable

May, 05 2015, Dabur Dental Team

Crowns are an ideal way to restore teeth that have been broken, or have been weakened by decay, a very large filling or any other dental problem. A crown could be used to improve the appearance of a tooth due to discoloured filling. One may also need a crown if they have had a root filling which may need a crown to protect what is left of the tooth. It can also be used to hold a bridge or denture firmly in place.

If properly maintained, crowns should last for many years. Your dentist will be able to tell you how long you may expect the crown to last. Ideally a crown should last anywhere between 5-15 years depending on how well you maintain it. The reason that you may need to change a crown could be as follows:

  • Wear and tear: When a person has a habit of clenching and grinding their teeth, they may need a change of crown. A new crown should be made before that point in time when dental plaque has had a chance to seep under and start a cavity.
  • Tooth decay:The tooth that a dental crown cements may be damaged by decay. In such a case, the dentist will need to take off the existing crown, clear the decay and make a replacement crown.
  • Damage:Accidents can cause a crown to fracture and in such cases they must be replaced without further delay. Any dental crown that has broken should be evaluated by your dentist.
  • Debeautification: With receding gum lines, the tip of the crown can become visible. Or sometimes, with time, the colour of the crown may not match those of the neighbouring teeth. A dental crown can be replaced under such cases. To ensure that your crown lasts a long time, here is what all you can do to care for it and avoid other dental problems:
  • Hygiene: To prevent decay affecting the crown, it is important to keep this area just as clean as you would keep your natural teeth. Brush for two minutes twice a day with India’s best toothpaste - Babool and clean in between your teeth with floss.
  • Food:
If you are using dental crowns, it is important that you watch what you eat and strictly avoid chewing extremely sticky foods, such as caramels, which can accidentally dislodge your crown. Also avoid biting on hard objects, which can damage your crown as well as your natural teeth.
  • Special Care:
Wear a custom-made night guard if you clench or grind your teeth.
Maintain proper oral hygiene and choose the right toothpaste to keep all dental problems away & ensure proper dental care.
